CHARLES LIM, Cyber Security Expert Whose Passion is to Build Secure Digital System Defending Against Cyber Crime

In the digital era, data has become a very important asset. Many digital crimes are committed by stealing and misusing data, such as bank account burglary, or health manipulation cases that can threaten someone’s life.

Cybersecurity is needed so that the protection of the government, corporate, and personal data can be maintained. Therefore, qualified IT experts are needed to be able to build a strong digital security system.

Dr. Charles Lim, Msc., CTIA, CHFI, EDRP, ECSA, ECSP, ECIH, CEH, CEI is a Cyber Security Researcher and Lecturer at Master of Information Technology Swiss German University. As an independent researcher, Charles Lim has a role in helping state data security. He is working with the National Cyber ​​and Crypto Agency (BSSN), Ministry of Communication and Informatics (KEMKOMINFO), Ministry of Defense (KEMHAN), Bank Indonesia, as well as consultants and professional trainers related to IT security.

At BSSN, he is part of the Working Group that compiles regulations and academic research on the Cyber ​​Security Workforce Map, Cyber ​​Crisis Management, Competency Development for the SKKNI Security Operations Center, and Cybersecurity Incident Response. Charles Lim is also part of the formation of the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology working group regulations to assess Government Web Security, ISO 20000 & 15504 standards, and Government Computer Security Incident Response Team (GovCSIRT).

In the industrial sector, he is active as an IT Security professional. He has consulted and trained various clients include Indosat, XL Axiata Tbk, Sinar Mas, CIMB Niaga, Bank Mestika, Bank Mandiri, Bank Ganesha, Central Bank of Indonesia, Lembaga Sandi Negara, Ministry of Communication and Informatics, Ministry of Education, and National Cyber and Encryption Agency. His professional security certification includes: Eccouncil Certified Threat Intelligence Analyst, Computer Hacking Forensics Investigator, Disaster Recovery Profesional, Certified Security Analyst, Certified Secure Programmer, Certified Incident Handler, Certified Ethical Hacker, and Certified Eccouncil Instructor.

He is one of the recipients of the ECCouncil Circle of Excellence Instructor Award in 2009. His research collaboration work with BSSN includes Malware Analysis and Threat Intelligence. He is the Chapter Lead of Indonesia Honeynet Project and is also actively involved in many information security communities, such as ACAD (Academy), CSIRT, OWASP Jakarta Chapter, and Asosiasi Forensik Digital Indonesia (AFDI).

Charles Lim has extensive teaching experience in higher-level education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has personally supervised more than sixty cross-disciplinary bachelor students and advised and/or co-advised more than thirty master students in their thesis and projects. He has been regarded as one of the best lecturers in 2010 and 2017 by Binus International University and in 2018 by Swiss German University.

He also received two times (2019 and 2020) research grants from The Information Society Innovation Fund (ISIF Asia) for his research in Honeynet Threat Sharing Platform, contributing cybersecurity threat sharing to Indonesia and ASEAN economies.

His experience has made Charles Lim a frequent public speaker at conferences, workshops, and seminars. His opinion as an IT expert has also been widely published in various mass media.
