Sustainability is key of the hospitality industry in the future!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

The hospitality industry has historically had a dramatic environmental impact on the environment through energy and water consumption, and use of consumable goods. This proof evidently, that the hotel sector puts increased pressure on the environment and is demanding on the natural resources.<\/p>\r\n

And now the industry has been quick to respond the issue by many changes and trying to progressively turning to be more \u2018green\u2019. Green hotel is now becoming trend. Hilton Worldwide, Intercontinental Hotel Group, Marriott, Starwood and Carlson Rezidor to name a few that practice green hotel.<\/p>\r\n

But what is Green Hotel?<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

An eco-hotel, or a green hotel, is an environmentally sustainable hotel or accommodation that has made important environmental improvements to its structure in order to minimize its impact on the natural environment. The basic definition of an eco-friendly hotel is is one that makes significant efforts to reduce its environmental impact, both behind-the-scenes and in guest rooms.<\/p>\r\n

They are designed and run to have a positive impact on the environment as well as the local community. This is a pretty broad definition, which means that there are a wide range of ways a hotel can improve its green credentials and become part of the trend.<\/p>\r\n

What Makes a Hotel Eco-Friendly?<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

Eco-friendly hotels come in all shapes and sizes, as well as different levels of commitment, but all features of these hotels share a common theme \u2013 minimizing carbon emissions and working to have a positive impact on the environment and community around them, without sacrificing guest experience. <\/strong>There\u2019s a lot of flexibility for hotels in this area as eco-products, systems and even building design innovations become ever more available.<\/p>\r\n

A few common practices of green hotel include: ramping up recycling and composting programs; installing energy-efficient lighting; using non-toxic cleaning products; providing personal care products for guests that are non-toxic or packaged in bulk containers instead of tiny single-use plastic bottles; using reusable dishes and cutlery in hotel restaurants as well as rooms; greywater recycling; and providing signs encouraging guests to hang their bath towels up for reuse.<\/p>\r\n

Speaking of internships, every SGU Hotel & Tourism Management student will be required to take part in two internships: in Indonesia and abroad. In their first internship in Indonesia, students will usually enter the Room Division, such as Front Office or Housekeeping. In the second internship, they will usually be directed to take the Food and Beverage field, such as hot kitchens (a kitchen that supports the use of heat in cooking all sorts of ingredients, whether by boiling, steaming, frying, stir-frying, stewing or roasting, etc.), cold kitchens (a kitchen that supports cooking processes that do not require heat), or restaurant service.<\/p>\r\n

In the second internship, anyone who studies Hotel & Tourism Management at SGU can have the opportunity to do an internship in Europe such as Germany or Switzerland. Students taking an internship in Germany will be required to take a six month internship program, but if they choose to go to Switzerland, they will be required to do an internship for six months while continuing one semester at IMI Switzerland (two semesters in total). This is what characterizes SGU Hotel & Tourism Management, because you will definitely be exposed to the European Internship Experience and work with people who are experienced in their fields. However, students also have the freedom to take internships in other countries with good hospitality growth such as the United Arab Emirates (Dubai, Abu Dhabi), Qatar (Doha), or Hong Kong.<\/p>\r\n

SGU Hotel & Tourism Management graduates will earn a bachelor\u2019s degree in management under the business administration faculty. Given that the world of hospitality and tourism is growing rapidly both in Indonesia and abroad, SGU graduates can get excellent career prospects in managerial level positions. They will have career opportunities to work in national and multinational organizations within the hospitality industry, such as accommodation, business in travel & tourism, and marketing events. In addition, graduates are also trained with professional business skills to operate within this industry as future supervisors, managers, and owners.<\/p>\r\n
