Youth Development Public Speaking Workshop
Let’s delve back into some of the common television shows that were top hits back in the days of my childhood years. Growing up, I used to watch shows like The Apprentice, Dragons’ Den, and Shark Tank. There was a certain magnetic force that had its grip on me as I watched those talented individuals put their best foot forward, passionately presenting their ideas related to various business-related affairs with marvelous and charismatic postures. They would dress, speak, and even move in such an eloquent, confident state.
Often, I would wonder to myself, What would it take for me to embody that state? I dreamt of having their communicative abilities in presentation skills. The look on their faces and the joy when the champions achieved their victory on screen gave 11-year-old me an idea of how being confident in communication could lead one to their goal.
On the 31st of May 2024, I had the wonderful privilege to create the value of confidence in communication through an interactive class for the youth community in Telkomsel Bogor. The class had ten bright students from different parts of Java Island who were completing their internship in Telkomsat’s IT Division. Their leader, Mr. Nugroho Wibisono, a fellow alumni from SGU who graduated with a Master of Information Technology, shared the same passion for learning and gave the objective of these students to enhance their skills in communication as they were preparing for their final exam presentation where they were to showcase their projects that serve as a tool for Telkomsat to perform IT services.
The class started with initial lessons, introducing what was important in communication in the mind before it got to the words, attributes, gestures, and everything else. It is fundamental for the mind to come up with states of being, such as transparency, sincerity, respect, and, most basic of all, happiness; this convinces the mind to send signals to the rest of the body, thus allowing the individual to embody the desired state.
Next came the exercises, where the participants embraced several prompts and keywords used for communication in meetings and presentations through listening and role-playing activities. They would take turns observing and reminding each other that what matters most is to maintain a happy state when learning, thus maintaining confidence while engaging in the exercises.
The grand finale of the program was when they each gave a short presentation regarding their project, focusing on three key points: their function, how they could contribute to Telkomsa IT services, and how they could be distinguished from others. Here, they applied the words they learned and received feedback on how they could improve.
It was such a joyful and wonderful experience for me to guide individuals into confidence in communication, and they all performed very well on their final exam presentation.
