Getting to Know the Zero-Waste Philosophy: Another Way to Save our Planet

According to The World Counts, 2.12 billion tons of waste were disposed annually. In fact, 99% of the goods we bought were end up in garbage truck just in six months. There are many different wastes that is dumped on the planet, even Wikipedia lists over 50 different types of waste. For examples: Electronic waste, Hazardous chemical waste, Persistent organic pollutants and etc.

Based on these figures, it is not a surprise that we might need 1.67 of Earths to sustain our lifestyle if nothing has changed. Perhaps it is time to reconsider our needs or maybe it’s time to consider new living habit, for example is zero waste living, have you heard about it?

What Is Zero Waste? What Does It Aim to Do?

Zero Waste is a goal that is ethical, economical, efficient and visionary, to guide people in changing their lifestyles and practices to emulate sustainable natural cycles, where all discarded materials are designed to become resources for others to use.

The 5 R’s of Zero Waste

The 5 Rs are essentially the order in which to reduce waste. Think of them as plans A, B, C, D, and E.  If you can’t do step one, move on to the next, and so forth:

  • Refuse what you don’t need (single-use plastic, plastic grocery bags, non-biodegradable, plastic razors, coffee cups etc.)
  • Reduce what you do need (stop buying new clothes, cut back on how often you do laundry, don’t always upgrade for the latest smartphone)
  • Reuse by either buying second-hand or repurposing things
  • Recycle only that which can’t be eliminated by the former three
  • Rot what’s left

Will Zero-Waste Really Make A Difference?

With just one small step at a time, you can greatly reduce your footprint. But, going zero waste isn’t just great for the environment, you’ll notice an improvement in your quality of life. Side effects include eating better, feeling better, saving money, and not having to take out the trash!
