Mechatronics Study Paves the Way to Start a Career in Aviation Engineering

Working in the aviation industry is not only a pilot or a flight attendant. Many other important professions support the aviation industry, one of which is engineers.

In the Engineers Talk session held by SGU, Engineers Altius Bahari, Hendryg Sansury, told about what is needed if you want to work as an engineer in the field of aviation. Most positions require expertise in a variety of engineering or science fields, including mechanical, electronic, and software engineering.

Mechatronics is a college major that is a combination of these three skills. That is why mechatronics graduates have the opportunity to become aircraft and helicopter engineers,”’ he said. Hendryg was a speaker on the Engineers Talk on the theme “Applicability Mechatronic in Civil Helicopter Technology”.

Hendryg said, there are two fields of work for engineers in the aviation industry, namely design and maintenance. If you choose as a designer, you are in charge of designing an airplane or helicopter that will be produced by the company.

The designer is also in charge of evaluating the design to see that the product meets engineering principles. They can develop new technologies for use in aviation.

In addition to technical skills, collaboration and communication skills are essential because designers and engineers typically work in teams. Aircraft designers often lead groups of teams and must have organizational and leadership skills.

The second option is to work in aircraft or helicopter maintenance. This task ensures that the aircraft is in good condition and safe to fly.

Work as an aircraft technician must also have a basic license first. The license is granted by the institution in the country where your company works.

For Europe, the license is granted by EASA. Meanwhile in Indonesia, the license is granted by the Ministry of Transportation. The licenses required vary depending on the scope of work and the type of aircraft handled.

Types of licenses issued by the Ministry of Transportation:

A1: General License for Airframe Airplane (Fixed Wing)
A2: General License for Airframe Helicopter (Rotary Wing)
A3: General License for Engine Piston
A4: General License for Turbine Engine

Types Rating:

C1: General License for Radio and Electronics
C2: General License for the Instrument
C4: General License for Electrical

For example, to become an airline technician you need a minimum of licenses A1 and A4 or a complete License C from C1, C2 to C4. After you have a license, you also have to get a certification to handle certain types of aircraft. Each type of aircraft may only be handled by a mechanic according to the special certificate.

“For example, if you have a Boeing 777 license, you can only handle the aircraft. The certificates for other aircraft types will be different, ”said Hendryg.

Similar to designers, aircraft technicians also need communication skills so they can collaborate with teams. Foreign language skills are also needed, especially if you work for a foreign company.
