Identifying Your Primary Learning Style and Why It’s Important
Have you ever wondered why you digest information easier through different methods? Well, that has got to do with your primary learning style. There are primarily four in which you might prefer learning by seeing (visual), learning by hearing (auditory), learning by reading and writing (read/write), or learning by doing (kinesthetic).
When it comes to identifying a person’s primary learning style, there are a variety of ways including self-assessments, interviews, and observation. The popular one among them being
self-assessments where one evaluates oneself. There is also an online tool to help you assess known as the VARK questionnaire which will measure your preference.
Knowing your primary learning style can be a valuable insight for both students and teachers.
For students, understanding their primary learning style can help them to study more efficiently and effectively. For example, if a student knows that they are a visual learner, they can focus on using visual aids such as charts, graphs, picture aids, and PowerPoint slides when studying. If they know they are an auditory learner, they may benefit from listening to lectures or recordings of their own notes. Students save time and effort and gain a better understanding of the material by learning in a way that is most convenient and effective for their individual learning style.

Knowing your primary learning style can also help students to identify their strengths and weaknesses in learning. For instance, if a student finds it hard to understand abstract concepts, but excels in hands-on activities, they may be a kinesthetic learner. Understanding this can help them to approach learning differently and focus on their strengths to excel.
For teachers, understanding the primary learning styles of their students can help them to create a more effective learning environment for the class as a whole. Teachers are also able to better understand what may or may not work for certain students.
To summarize, it is important to note that learning styles are not fixed and can change over time, and many people have a combination of learning styles. Identifying a person’s primary learning style is furthermore beneficial in many ways and if you haven’t identified yours, I hope you’re convinced now.
