Computer Programming Competition for High School Students

Computer Programming Competition for High School Students

The Student Organization of the Bachelor of Information Technology (ORBIT) of Swiss German University held an annual event titled “SGU Game-A-Thon BITnnovation 2017” (SBC2k17) for the second time. SBC2k17 is a computer programming competition especially designed for high school students. This year, ORBIT focused on a computer programming competition with Android Mobile Application as the output. Not only was the competition about game development, but also in creative mobile app innovation production, which brings solutions to various problems in the real world. The theme for SBC2K17 was “Mobile Application Innovation as the Learning Solution in the Education World” and we used MIT AppInventor 2 (http://appinventor.mit.edu/explore/) as the workshop and competition material.

SMU Atisa Dipamkara Conducted the Workshop at SGU Campus

Last year, ORBIT only conducted an Android-based game-making competition by using GameSalad software for SGU Game-A-Thon 2016, in which 38 teams participated, with 106 students from 17 schools. This year, to prepare and socialize with all the participants before the competition, the committee went to 23 schools to conduct a workshop. From 22 schools, there came 46 teams who joined the competition. The workshop not only held face to face activities in the IT Lab, but especially for this year there was a workshop for one school, SMAK St. Petrus, done via conference video call with video conferencing software, V-Meet Pro. ORBIT knows how to take the introduction of technology to high school students to another level!

Last October, the committee conducted an elimination process and successfully brought 20 teams to join the exhibition at Glass House Living World, Mal Alam Sutera. Besides the computer programming competition, there were others such as “Mobile Legend” and “Break Dance”. The exhibition lasted for 3 days, from 20 to 22 October 2017, and featured project exhibitions from semester 5 students. Visitors could inspect and try the projects (namely V.I Runspiegel, Gesturino, Kindernitor, and Urban Farmer) directly to obtain more information about them.
