Study Excursion of SGU-GT Bridging Program to Indonesia’s National Institute of Aeronautics and Space

On 1st March 2016, 30 students of Swiss German University – Gajah Tunggal (SGU-GT) Bridging Program went on a study excursion to the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space/Lembaga Penerbangan dan Antariksa Nasional (LAPAN) in Rumpin, Tangerang. The excursion was led by the coordinator of the program who is also the Dean of Faculty of Engineering and IT (FEIT) of Swiss German University (SGU), Dr. Ir. Gembong Baskoro, M.Sc. The visit aimed to provide practical knowledge related to aeronautics, rocketry, and satellites.

Courtesy welcome to the delegation of bridging program SGU-GT

The group of students accompanied by the Faculty Admin Officer (FAO) of the program, Anis Choirunnisa, ST, arrived at the Aeronautics Technology Center/Pusat Teknologi Penerbangan (Pustekbang). The group was welcomed to Pustekbang by the official of LAPAN, Mr. Tri Widodo, and escorted to the Pustekbang Auditorium. At 9:00 AM, LAPAN’s division head of dissemination, Dipl.-Ing. Agus Bayu Utama, M.Sc., ME delivered a welcoming speech to the delegation and introduced and overviewed LAPAN organization and programs managed by LAPAN.

The Dean of FEIT expressed gratitude to LAPAN officials for giving the opportunity to share the knowledge, know-how, and best practice related to aeronautics, rocketry, and satellites with  SGU-GT bridging program students. Furthermore, Drs. Ari Sugeng Budiyanto, M.Eng. of LAPAN presented the development of LAPAN Surveillance Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (LSU)/Drone as well as other LAPAN programs such as Aircraft N219 (joint project between LAPAN and IPTN), LAPAN Satellite e.g. LAPAN-TUBSAT and LAPAN-A2/ORARI.

The presentation continued with an enthusiastic question and answer session. The visit continued to the Hypersonic Wind Tunnel testing laboratory. During the visit in this laboratory, the hypersonic wind tunnel testing to visualize shock wave over the rocket nose was demonstrated. Finally the delegation paid a visit to the facility of satellite control center of LAPAN-A2/ORARI. In this satellite facility, the delegation of bridging program of SGU-GT was explained in an interesting presentation regarding Indonesia satellite development, launch, and control. The students were amazed at LAPAN’s satellite development.

Before the delegation of bridging program of SGU-GT left, the Dean of FEIT had a courtesy meeting with the head of Pustekbang, Drs. Gunawan Setyo Prabowo, MT. During the meeting both of them showed a positive gesture towards exploring further possible cooperation between the Faculty of Engineering and IT, SGU and Pustekbang of LIPI especially on the “Tri Dharma” and possible resource sharing towards technology development of aeronautics, rocketry and satellites.
