The Education and Industry Sectors Reunite Through the Appointment of a Swiss German University Researcher as Production Director of PT Dirgantara Indonesia

The synergy between education and industry is once again strengthened with the appointment of Dena Hendriana, B.Sc., S.M., Sc.D., as the Production Director of PT Dirgantara Indonesia in December 2024. Dena Hendriana, the Head of the Master of Mechatronics Study Program at Swiss German University (SGU), brings over two decades of experience in mechatronics, aerodynamics, and manufacturing technology to support the transformation of Indonesia’s aerospace industry.

A graduate of Northeastern University for his undergraduate studies and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for his master’s and doctoral degrees, Dena began his career in education and research at MIT. There, he developed numerical methods for efficient fluid flow simulations, laying a strong foundation for his work at international companies such as General Motors, Chrysler, EXA Corporation, and Ford Motor Company in the United States.

At Ford, he designed innovative aerodynamic devices like spoilers and diffusers that enhanced vehicle fuel efficiency and performance. This work bridged cutting-edge technology with real-world applications, establishing him as an expert in aerodynamics and systems design.

Upon returning to Indonesia, Dena served as a lecturer, researcher, and Director of the Center for Computational Fluid Dynamics at Universitas Surya in Serpong, leading research on sustainable technology applications, including renewable energy and agricultural automation. His research contributed to efficiency and innovation in the energy and agricultural sectors.

Since 2015, Dena Hendriana has been leading SGU’s Master of Mechatronics Study Program. Under his leadership, the program has become a frontrunner in addressing the challenges of Industry 4.0 with a hands-on curriculum integrating technologies like robotics and intelligent control systems. He also teaches Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, and Research Methodology, fostering student competence and instilling values of innovation and collaboration.

Dena’s research on energy efficiency, industrial automation, and sustainable solutions forms the foundation for strategic projects in Indonesia and globally. His ability to bridge industry needs with relevant academic research serves as an inspiration for many. For Dena, collaboration between education and industry is key to driving sustainable innovation.

This appointment is a testament to his expertise and a source of motivation for the academic community and students. Dena believes his cross-sectoral experience can inspire young people to unlock their potential and contribute to national progress. With a synergistic approach, he hopes to bring innovation and meaningful contributions to Indonesia.

“Dena Hendriana’s appointment highlights the importance of collaboration between education and industry. We fully support this step and believe this synergy will drive innovation and shared progress,” said SGU Rector, Dr. Dipl.-Ing. Samuel P. Kusumocahyo.

Dena Hendriana’s appointment as Production Director of PT Dirgantara Indonesia underscores the significance of close collaboration between higher education and industry. With his rich background in research and practical experience, Dena is expected to drive innovations that strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global aerospace sector.
