Building a Stronger Cybersecurity Community : Highlights from the Cybersecurity Seminar & Workshop 2024

The National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN) and Swiss German University (SGU), in collaboration with the Center for Digital Forensics Studies (PUSFID) at the Islamic University of Indonesia (UII), organized the Cybersecurity Seminar & Workshop: Enhancing Incident Response Readiness & Collaborative Strategies on August 28-29, 2024.

This two-day event was divided into two main sessions. The first session was a seminar held in a hybrid format, utilizing online platforms to reach participants who could not attend in person. Over 100 participants from various regions in Indonesia, including cybersecurity practitioners, academics, and representatives from multiple sectors, joined the seminar. The second session was a fully offline workshop where participants engaged in hands-on practice and in-depth discussions on cybersecurity topics.

Dr. Ir. Charles Lim, Deputy Head of the Master of Information Technology Program at SGU, represented the university and delivered a compelling presentation on the critical importance of robust incident response strategies and cross-sector collaboration in effectively countering cyber threats. He emphasized that cybersecurity is not merely a technical challenge but a strategic one, requiring coordinated efforts among academia, industry, and government to safeguard national interests and ensure a secure digital landscape.

Dr. Yudi Prayudi, the Chairperson of the Seminar and Workshop, stated that the workshop offers valuable insights into building and managing a Cyber Incident Response Team (CSIRT) and the importance of cross-sector collaboration in enhancing preparedness and response to cyber incidents.

Dr. Sulistyo, S.Si., S.T., M.Si., Deputy for Cybersecurity and Encryption for Government and Human Development at BSSN, delivered the keynote speech. In his address, Dr. Sulistyo highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration in addressing increasingly complex cyber threats and the need for better preparedness from all parties to respond to cyber incidents quickly and effectively.

Given the success of this event, BSSN and its partners plan to organize similar activities in other regions across Indonesia. One of the primary goals of this initiative is to establish cybersecurity communication forums involving all stakeholders in these regions. These forums are expected to serve as platforms for strengthening cooperation and coordination in addressing cybersecurity challenges at the regional level.

The event also highlights the importance of close collaboration between various sectors and the enhancement of human resource capacity in cybersecurity, particularly in dealing with the increasingly complex and diverse threats in today’s digital age.

The event aimed to enhance cybersecurity awareness, exchange knowledge and experience, boost technical expertise, and improve readiness to effectively manage and address cyber threats. It also fostered cross-sector collaboration and promoted the formation and strengthening of regional Cyber Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs) to elevate overall cybersecurity preparedness.

The Cybersecurity Seminar & Workshop organized by BSSN, SGU, and PUSFID represents a significant step forward in our collective efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s cybersecurity landscape. This event provided valuable insights and hands-on experience and underscored the necessity of cross-sector collaboration in safeguarding our digital infrastructure. As we move forward, the lessons learned and connections forged during these two days will serve as a foundation for future initiatives, helping to build a more resilient and secure digital environment across Indonesia.
