The Extraordinary Amazing Race in 2017
The Student Association of Food Technology (SAFT) of Swiss German University organized an event called “Amazing Cooking Race 2017” last November which used “Indonesian Fusion Food” as the theme. This concept was chosen as a way to reignite the passion of young people for local cuisine. The event enabled those present to learn how to maximize the potential of Indonesian food as a whole by avoiding unattractive presentation and a sense of inferiority against foreign brands, while also complementing global cuisine.
“Amazing Cooking Race” was an appetizing cooking experience which coalesced with the famous “Amazing Race” team challenge concept. All the participants raced against the clock and each other in a science-culinary-sport event to complete several game stations scattered around the South Tangerang area before arriving at the final station to cook the dishes. The participants were divided into teams of 3 and they were given a clue, map, and budget to find the hidden station where they would unlock the food science challenge.

The first part was the main contest where the competitors raced to find 5 posts hidden in several locations throughout Alam Sutera, Gading Serpong and Lippo Karawaci. The teams were only given enough clues to get to the right post and complete the missions. The next part was the cooking competition itself, with the teams divided into two batches depending on their time of arrival. The contest proceeded with the exchange of accumulated points for ingredients, before the teams were given the surprise of their mystery ingredient—avocado. Each team were then allowed only 3 minutes to discuss their dish before cooking it in a tag-team format. Commendably, all teams were able to plate their dish in time, which they then presented to the judges; Chef Rano and Mr. Harnaz.

To complete the Amazing Cooking Race series, SAFT also conducted a seminar with the title of “Healthy Lifestyle” at OMNI Hospital Alam Sutera by presenting dr. Sandy Perkasa, Sp.PD from OMNI Hospital, and a member of P3FNI, who is also a Food Technology lecturer of SGU, Maria D.P.T. Gunawan Puteri, S.T.P., M.Sc., Ph.D as the speakers. The good doctors shared information about cholesterol and cardiovascular-healthy foods, and cardiovascular disease respectively. At the end of the seminar, the committee announced the three winners of “Amazing Cooking Race 2017” who had all achieved similarly high scores, which were calculated from their speed and success rate in completing their missions. Congratulations to all!
