SGU Visits Jakarta Smart City and Indosat Ooredoo

On Tuesday, 29th of March 2016, the Bachelor of Information Technology students of Swiss German University visited two institutions which were the Jakarta Smart City and Indosat Ooredoo in Jakarta, Indonesia. During the visits, the 50 students from the 2nd, 4th and 8th semester were accompanied by Mr. Kho I Eng and Mr. Maulahikmah Galinium. The theme of this excursion is all about Smart city.

Jakarta Smart City (JSC) was established in December 2015. It is located at Balai Kota, Jakarta. The main focus of JSC is to help the Government of DKI Jakarta Province to build a modern and innovative city which is able to manage all city resources efficiently and effectively by using Information Technology. The goal is to increase the prosperity of people in Jakarta. Here, IT students could learn some applications developed by the JSC team, including the e-budgeting, e-transportation, flood sensors on some rivers, and the Qlue application. Qlue is used by people to report any problems to DKI Jakarta so that the government can respond to them promptly.  The Qlue team was also invited to JSC to present and explain its applications. SGU IT students could also see how the JSC team monitors all situations in Jakarta in real time from the control room by using a big screen.

Furthermore, after visiting the JSC, the excursion continued with a visit to Indosat Ooredoo in Central Jakarta. The Indosat Ooredoo team presented their activities and their technology, especially in machine-to-machine technology, such as tracking and tracing road vehicles, healthcare areas, smart metering, etc. This technology is also part of the smart city. Therefore, Indosat supports smart city through its products. In addition to the presentation, the students also saw the control room of Indosat where it monitors all BTS (Base Transceiver Station) in Indonesia.

Through this excursion program, the students could understand how smart city applications work and how they can help society. Hopefully after graduating, some students could build a start-up company that will develop smart city applications.
