Business Administration Department Excursion to Mercedes Benz Indonesia
On 19th May 2015, over 60 Business Administration (BA) Department’s students went on an excursion to the Mercedes Benz factory in Bogor, accompanied by Mr. Junaidi Sinaga and Mr. Rachman Sjarief as the lecturers. This was a very valuable opportunity for the 2nd semester students to get direct experience and expose themselves to production and operations management, in the factory of one of the best-selling luxury automakers in the world. As the 3rd semester internship program looms over the students, the excursion was a fantastic learning opportunity.
Upon arrival at Plant Wanaherang, Bogor, all students were amazed as they strolled through a car factory, for the first time. Firstly, students were introduced to the plant’s head of Human Resources, Ms. Esti who gave a clear presentation on Mercedes Benz’s history in Indonesia.
Next, the staff took the students to where “all the magic happens”, as they went from one station to the other, paying attention to how each car is meticulously assembled. Perhaps the biggest surprise for the students is how everything was made purely by man and not a single robotic arm was in sight.
The students also had an opportunity to understand Mercedes Benz’s design product, with the product description and its market, what type of quality tools are used to assume the quality of its product, production capacity, and plant lay out. To end the day, a celebratory souvenir was given to Farahiyah Ghassani from class 2B for her constructive criticism during this excursion.
The excursion was far more than simply looking and note taking. Students got first-hand experience of real life operations management as well as some questions and answers for their upcoming internship program.
