Facing the 4th Industrial Revolutionary Era, Swiss German University Holds an Internationally-Leveled Symposium

Along with the era of globalization and the increasingly unstoppable digital era, the world is also now entering the era of the fourth industrial revolution, known as Industry 4.0. Industry 4.0 is a term referring to automation trends and the latest data exchanges in the industrial world. It is marked by the emergence of super computers, artificial intelligence (AI), the integration of the digital world with industrial production systems, and the Internet of Things (IoT). As a developing country, Indonesia must be ready to face and adapt to this revolutionary era.

As an industry-oriented higher education institution that emphasizes technology, Swiss German University (SGU) hosted an international symposium entitled "International Symposium towards Industry 4.0" aimed at preparing stakeholders to face the 4th industrial revolution era. SGU hopes that a collaboration between higher education institutions and industry partners, academicians, and other communities with a similar vision can be established so that Indonesian human resources can be equipped with a deeper understanding of the 4th industrial revolution and how to implement real business to become a strong foundation for Indonesia to develop into one of the countries with rapid industrial progress.

Speakers who shared their experiences and insights on this topic were: Prof. Dr. Manfred Kiesel, a lecturer from SGU's university partner, the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt, Germany; Tatik Nurhayatiningsih, the Department Manager of Assembly Passenger Car, PT Mercedes-Benz Indonesia; Idham Syewket Adnan, President of Mercedes-Benz Club Indonesia; and Dr. Dr. Dipl.-Ing. Rachman Sjarief, MM., MH., SGU lecturer. Dr. Ing. Evita H. Legowo, lecturer, and the Director of the SGU Academic Research and Community Service was also present as the moderator during the panel session.

"SGU can prepare the next generation to be ready to compete internationally by integrating industry-oriented courses in its curriculum and internship program, which is held twice in semester 3 in Indonesia, and semester 6 in Europe," said SGU Rector, Dr. rer. nat. Filiana Santoso. "In addition, SGU is also focusing on industry experience where students follow activities such as industry excursions, and the integration of the concept of the Internet of Things, and automation in the curriculum as well as directing the students to conduct in-house research and thesis making in SGU industry partners as part of its teaching and learning activities,” Filiana added.

Located at Gran Melia Hotel Jakarta, this event also held a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing between SGU and the Mercedes-Benz Club Indonesia community. The signing of this MoU is a realization of SGU's responsibility in community outreach programs. "SGU in its capacity as one of the best private higher education institutions in Indonesia has shown its concern and responsibility in community outreach programs. Hopefully, this collaboration between the Mercedes-Benz Club Indonesia and SGU, can be useful not only for the members of the club, but also for the wider community," said Idham Syewket Adnan, the President of the Mercedes-Benz Club Indonesia.

During this international symposium event, SGU also provided scholarships for selected undergraduate and postgraduate students who have the potential to become a competent, young, global generation of  Indonesians in facing the 4th industrial revolution with all its challenges.
